Android 16 whispers are already in the wind with the open-source development. A visual facelift awaits, and core components like notification shade are going to see the full brunt of development. Think Live Activities, the Apple way, but in-the-wild on Android, that keep you hooked to real-time events. Could we finally have an Android rival to the de facto Samsung DeX? A Desktop Mode would essentially run your phone into a tiny but mighty workstation. Google offered a glimpse of its UI concept with a very short-lived blog about Material 3 Expressive, which was quickly scrubbed off but never forgotten. The internet, as always, remembers. The next Android is being built on a tantalizingly thin thread of leaks.
Developer beta 16 is dropping hints for some subtle but desirable changes. Aurora cast was confirmed in March for the coming platform. Is Google going to shine the light on every one of these hidden gems in today’s announcement? Stay tuned to find out which features are worthy of the spotlight this afternoon.
Mark that date! Google I/O 2025 will begin with a highly awaited Google Keynote at 1 PM ET/10 AM PT on May 20. Expect Android, Search, Google Workspace, and Gemini to have some limelight, as always.
While one can claim that Android will somehow be seen, dedicated stage time is not to be expected. What will really be under the spotlight? Gemini, with a whole lot of deep diving into Google’s AI prowess, showered maybe with some glimpses of Android XR, followed by some top-class jaw-dropping demos of wild experimental things such as Project Astra. And the future will be unveiled.
Save that date! The future will be revealed on 20th May at 1 PM, ET. The keynote of Google I/O will be streaming live on Google’s YouTube channel. Here on Engadget, join right at the moment of feed go-live and don’t miss a moment. Get ready for a whole lot of innovation!

Gear up, Galaxy gadget gurus! Samsung has unleashed this bomb: Gemini is roaring toward your Galaxy Watch and Buds! Expect a smarter, more intuitive wearable experience “in the coming months.” It’s Gemini’s spectacular first ride to Samsung’s wrist- and ear-bound technologies. And for good measure, Samsung pledged that pairing Gemini with the forthcoming Galaxy Buds3 would feel so easy, it’ll seem like pure magic.
The may I ask a few words about the other products? Google’s pre-IO is indeed a tantalizing appetizer. Smart move. But don’t be fooled; May 20th is the day of the main dinner. Clear your calendars, for you would not want to miss round two.
Signing off after The Android Show concluded. A focused thirty minutes for announcements is appreciated sometimes, but it makes one ask the question we had after Samsung’s rapid-fire Unpacked: Was all of thisreallynecessary? Could google really not have just sent out an email? Meanwhile, Google went ahead with a blitz of blog posts about every new update. The team is now going through the digital fallout in hopes of finding every little detail.
Well, I guess Gemini has potential. Pretty much all I am thinking about is: “Are questions really so burning right now that they must be aided by or interacted with by AI immediatelly?” If not, then the AI’s answers truly aren’t hitting the spot.
Material 3 Expressive: an implication being a subtle yet major evolution of Android’s visual soul. The true game-changer here? Gemini. I wonder if it can finally breathe any semblance of intelligence into those horrendous assistant experiences in Wear OS and Android Auto, turning them from frustrations into seamless interactions.
How about you Igor, any big takeaways from the Android Show? *
The evolution of Find Hub is indeed interesting. Smart tags aren’t generally something I would go for, but I think discreet tracking would have its applications. This update makes that possibility real. And that is a major change.
Material 3 Expressive is not just a theme; it is a chromatic blast. It gives energy and flexibility to other systems, which otherwise feel…dull. It is what the design philosophy of OSes has been sorely missing.
There it is; you’ll miss it while blinking! It’s a momentary glimpse, a whisper of what could have been. But don’t let the mystery hold you back; a galaxy-full of stunning, new Android phones is out there for you at this very moment. Get out there and discover.
What did you think of the show, Sam? Any highlights? *

* Android 16 adds new features for scam detection and device finding
This summer sees the launch of Android 16, the ever-protecting layer against all digital villains. Maybe tougher security that slams the door in the faces of scammers, and of thieves trying to take advantage of stolen devices. Remember those toll road messages wrongfully demanding your money, clogging up your inbox? Google’s AI, which had been able to weed out fraudulent text messages since March, is undergoing a strong upgrade. It’s supercharging its scam-detecting capabilities to stop more sneaky tricks. Additionally, the Google Play Protect is going to be faster. Quick analysis of dangerous apps means quicker exposure and faster neutralization.
Android 16 is going to slam the privacy door on in-call breaches! Farewell to hijacking of accessibility permissions when an unknown caller tries to ring in. But it does not stop there: meet Key Verifier, your protection from contact-list scammers. This nifty tool lets you and your trusted friend exchange digital keys locking down your identities and leaving the scammers stranded outside.

Elsewhere, Samat dropped a mention of Android smart glasses, but the true showstopper was the product narrative director, Dieter Bohn, who, in live testing, put flagship Android phones through the paces, the razzle-dazzle of a myriad of features being on full display.
“Buckle up! In a plot worthy of a tech thriller, none other than former editorial titan at The Verge, Dieter Bohn, is now giving us the lowdown on the latest Android contenders.”

In a live demo, even. More like Gemini “Barely Alive.” Needless to say, Google has kept us all guessing: is this the revolutionary AI or just a slight upgrade of the Assistant?
Gemini isn’t just another tool; it’s a Swiss Army knife for the digital age. Shah unveils the email-taming prowess to condense infinite inboxes into neat little summaries. Then, with a flick of the wrist, his phone becomes the all-seeing eye of Gemini, using object recognition to identify things around it.
